The experience of having one ship blown from under him, (The Esmerelda) and his subsequent rescue by the Hen's crew to the ambiguous safety of an interdicted planet has made Ugo somewhat bitter, cynical and suspicious, with a low tolerance for the more usual spacer moral flexibility.

Ugo was pleasantly surprised to discover, once Capt. Chavez had time to come planetside, that Chavez considered him a full share screw member of the Old Speckled Hen. Buoyed up by this unlooked-for generosity, Ugo has responded in kind, putting his talents fully to work on the ship's behalf, taking on the role of Cargo Broker and CFO, to surprising effect.

With the Unexpected demise of Capt. Chavez during his forcible uplift in the Calvary System, Ugo Found himself Acting Captain of the Hen, and thanked the gods that the ships company had legally incorporated on Triffid as a co-operative trading association.
