Archaeological evidence found in a range of systems indicates that humanity is not the first species to have created interstellar empires.  Current evidence indicates that humanity is the sixth major race to have developed in this sector of space.  Research continues to determine what destroyed the others, none of which appear to have overlapped significantly in time, although it appears at least two were destroyed by internal conflict and one is thought to have voluntarily become extinct.
