Character Generation, notes and house rules

Page history last edited by PBworks 16 years, 4 months ago

Character Generation follows standard Classic Traveller book one rules, save that when rolling for skills players may roll before choosing which table to take a particular skill from.

Characters are citizens of the Imperium.

Languages have developed from Earth languages.  Characters get one free additional language for each three points of education and these can be chosen in play should you wish.  The Imperium mostly speaks Spanish (or what passes for it millennia from now), the Holy Gaian Empire mostly speaks Portugese, the Mercantile League mostly speaks Mandarin.  Swahili is a very common spacer language and all characters are assumed to speak it in addition to their native and free languages.  English is the language of interculture business and politics.

Blade Skills are Cutlass, Dagger and Foil.  Blade, Broadsword and Sword are not in common use within the Imperium.  Cutlasses are used in ship defence, foils are used in civilian duels and some military duels, daggers are daggers and are used wherever guns are not to hand...

Gun skills are Pistol (which includes automatic pistols, body pistols, revolvers, snub pistols and so on), Rifle (which includes assault rifles, carbines and shotguns), SMG, Laser and FGMP.  Characters should generally choose Pistol, Rifle or SMG which will tend to be most available.

Characters have Level 0 for free in each of Pistol, Foil and Vacc-Suit (which includes operating in zero-g environments and is because the PCs are spacefaring types, general NPCs don't get that).  Rogues get Streetwise 0 for free, Merchants get Admin 0 for free.

Note, personal honour is important to the citizens of the Imperium.  Duelling is legal and is an acceptable means of resolving disputes, though abuse of duelling in order to bully or intimidate is illegal and the manufacturing of cause is likewise illegal.  As such, although technically legal, duelling does carry some risk (other than of being skewered) as a defeated opponent or their relatives may argue illegality.  Duels are typically fought with foil, cutlass or pistol with swords being the default (pistols are only legitimate where both parties agree, but the parties need not use the same type of swords).

Artificial gravity and anti-gravity do not exist in this setting.  Jump travel takes approximately a week from the perspective of those within the jumping ship, and a jumping ship (or more accurately the folded space it is within) propagates at light speed from the perspective of the external universe.  As such, jump travel is light speed travel, not faster than light travel (which is considered impossible according to current theory, and if not impossible at least illegal).
